Reduction of environmental impact of animal production

Adisseo nutritional solutions contribute to reduce the environmental impact of animal production.

Animal farming accounts for approximately 14.5% of all greenhouse gas emissions and approximately 65% of ammonia emissions.

Along with livestock & manure management, practices aimed at lowering emissions include feed efficiency and feeding strategies designed to reduce animal excretion. Through feeds, Adisseo nutritional solutions have a positive effect on animal excretion and greenhouse gas emissions by four different modes of action.

By adding Adisseo nutritional solutions in the formula, beneficial changes in the inclusion rates of raw materials in the feed can be obtained.

Indeed, the inclusion rate of some raw materials with high environmental impact can be decreased, favoring local raw materials instead, thanks to the addition of methionine or enzymes. Feed palatability allows also flexibility in the raw material used.

Quick and accurate knowledge of the nutrient content of raw materials by NIR analysis is also key. With soybean meal, for example, it estimates the digestible amino acid content and allows more precise ingredient use.

Maximizing feed efficiency means that less feed is required to produce the same weight of animals, which saves resources.

Some feed additives help to extract more nutrients from feeds, helping animals to sustain their growth.

For example, enzymes release extra energy, amino acids and phosphorus from feed compared to what the animal can naturally digest. Complex enzyme solutions, in particular, improve the digestibility of all nutrients, including fat, starch, proteins, phosphorus, etc.

Feed preservatives maintain the energy & high nutritional value of feeds and support digestion.

This higher availability of nutrients will positively impact animal growth performance and improve Feed Conversion Ratio.

The reduction of excretion is a key topic, with implications for eutrophication, acidification and global warming potential. Adisseo nutritional solutions can help to decrease nitrogen excretion through amino acids,  multi-carbohydrases and reduce phosphorus levels through phytases.

Adding methionine (along with other amino acids) preserves the environment by reducing protein levels in feeds, therefore reducing nitrogen excretion and avoiding protein waste.

Enzymes (phytases and multi-carbohydrases ) are powerful ingredients in decreasing phosphorus and nitrogen excretion.

Multi-carbohydrase supplementation could decrease the excretion of ammonia by 13% (Geraert et al., JRA, 1997), and the combination of multi-carbohydrase and superdosed phytase – compared with no enzymes in the feed – decreased phosphorus excretion by 37% (Bello A. et al, APPC, 2018).

A better health status of the animals will impact the reduction of emissions.

Pure form of organic selenium or vitamin E play a role in helping animals to fight various types of stress (sanitary stresses, heat stress, etc.) and maintain good health, and as such do not compromise growth performance. Amino acids added to ruminant feeds also have a positive effect on animal health.

All solutions contributing to enhanced animal resilience, such as precision delivery coated butyrate, probiotic, etc provide an overall better gut health, less diseased animals and lower mortality levels. This improves animals’ performance such as Feed Conversion Ratio and increases production efficiency.
