Liquid or powder methionine: More than 1 million broilers do not see the difference!

07/28/2020

The two major methionine sources (DL-Methionine and liquid DL-OH-Methionine) sustain equally the growth performance of broilers as shown again recently by a field study conducted in partnership with a French poultry organization.

This study comparing powder and liquid methionine impact on broilers’ growth performance is of an unprecedented scale: the test was conducted on 10 months on more than one million broilers receiving feed with either liquid or powder methionine in blind conditions.

The dietary treatments were formulated for the four feeding phases (starter, grower 1, grower 2 and finisher) using corn, soybean meal, wheat and other local ingredients. Because of the nature and the duration of this study, different feed ingredients have been used for the respective production batches. However, the nutrients composition (i.e. energy, amino acids, minerals, etc.) have always been equal among the different formula and feed production batches. Diets were supplemented either with  DL-Met or DL-OH-Met on equimolar basis, i.e. 1 kg of DL-Met (99%) equals 1.12 kg of DL-OH-Met (88%), at the recommended sulfur amino acids levels. Diets met the recommendations in amino acids and nutrients levels. Feed and water were provided ad libitum during the entire study. Body weight and feed intake were measured for each farm at the end of the experiment (day 35). The average daily weight, average daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio were calculated for the whole study for each farm. Mortality was registered from day 0 to day 35. Birds were reared in different facilities (50 farms in total).

The conclusion is that these methionine sources have the same efficacy to sustain broilers’ performance, as no significant difference was found on Body weight gain, Feed Conversion Ratio or other parameters between the broilers’ groups. Rhodimet® AT88 brings 880 g of methionine value in formula for 1 kg product along with significant savings and practical benefits for feed millers and integrators.
