PEER REVIEW PUBLICATION ON THE EFFECTS OF HYDROXY-SELENOMETHIONINE (SELISSEO®) TO ENHANCE ANTIOXIDANT STATUS IN GILTHEAD SEABREAM
Selenium plays a very important role in antioxidant defense and in dealing with the stress associated to production conditions. A trial conducted at the University of Las Palmas (Spain) (Marwa et al. 2019) evaluated the effects of Selisseo® supplementation on selenium deposition, stress response, and muscle oxidative status in gilthead seabream.
Feeds were supplemented with 0.2 and 0.5 mg/kg of Selisseo®, with results proving significant improvements in terms of selenium deposition in muscle and liver, plasma cortisol levels following acute stress, and protection against oxidative stress in muscle tissue. Overall, Selisseo® supplementation was found to be an effective strategy to reinforce the antioxidant protection and ability to deal with stressful conditions.
