Different methionine sources: Same broiler performance

03/20/2017

When added to a basal methionine deficient diet and at the same equimolar level, three main sources of methionine all lead to the same growth performances of broilers. This was shown in some recent trials.

Methionine is an essential amino acid for animals, because it cannot be produced by the animal itself. This amino acid is vital for animal health and is needed for many functions in the animal’s body. There are three different methionine sources available in the animal feed industry: DL-Methionine, L-Methionine and DL-HMTBA. DL-HMTBA and DL Methionine are absorbed, metabolised, converted and used to provide L-Methionine to animals. Due to their respective chemical composition, DL-HMTBA and DL-Methionine are leading to different mechanisms of absorption, metabolism and conversion to L-Methionine and as consequence variable benefits for animals beyond performance. The powder methionine (DL-Methionine, L-Methionine) represents 60% of the market consumption and is the preferred form of pre-mixers, milkreplacers producers, etc. Liquid DL-HMTBA is used at 40% and mostly by integrators and feed millers.
