Support resilience early for consistent post-weaning performance in swine

Early gut care contributes to piglets’ readiness to face post-weaning challenges

Weaning is a critical and stressful phase for piglets, combining major dietary, environmental, and social changes. At this stage, the digestive system is still immature, making piglets more sensitive to nutritional and environmental challenges. In this context, while production practices remain constrained, the use of adapted nutritional tools and management approaches is key to help piglets better cope with this transition.

Managing Post-Weaning Diarrhea in piglets

Weaning is a critical phase for piglet gut health

At weaning, piglets face an abrupt transition:

  • Separation from the sow
  • Shift from milk to solid feed
  • Environmental and social stress

At weaning, the piglet’s gut is still developing at around 4 weeks of age, while full functional maturity is only reached between 8 and 12 weeks. This gap creates conditions that may favor post‑weaning diarrhea and performance losses.

Why diarrhea occurs ?

At weaning, piglets still have an immature digestive system, characterized by microbiota instability, low digestive enzyme activity and a fragile epithelial barrier. An immature gut has limited capacity to cope with the new challenges:

  • Limited digestion, leading to undigested nutrients reaching the lower gut
  • Proliferation of pathogens such as E. coli
  • Weakening of the gut barrier, associated with inflammation and increased permeability

This situation creates conditions that may favor post‑weaning diarrhea and contribute to performance losses.

Our approach, support piglet gut health at every stage

Implementing targeted nutritional approaches is associated with gut physiology and digestive processes during the post‑weaning period. Our solutions can help you: Prepare, Protect and Stabilize

Support a successful start after weaning

Weaning represents a major dietary transition while the digestive system is still immature. Supporting early feed intake and digestive development helps piglets adapt more efficiently to this critical period.

> Early feed intake
> Digestive readiness
> Improved nutrient utilization

Help piglets transition smoothly when the gut is most immature.

Reinforce gut structure and limit pathogen impact

Maintaining intestinal integrity is essential to help piglets cope with post-weaning stress and digestive challenges.

>Strengthen gut structure
>Support barrier integrity
>Reduce digestive challenge pressure

Maintain gut integrity under stress and help reduce diarrhea risk.

Maintain long-term microbiota balance

A balanced microbiota supports gut resilience and contributes to a more stable digestive environment throughout the post-weaning period.

>Limit pathogen colonization
>Promote microbiota balance
>Reinforce resilience

Build a resilient microbiota to support consistent post-weaning performance.

A comprehensive view of the post‑weaning period

During the post‑weaning phase, piglets face multiple changes while their digestive system is still developing. Understanding this transition involves several key elements:

  • Feed intake patterns after weaning
  • Nutrient digestion processes
  • Gut structure development
  • Microbiota dynamics

In this context, nutritional solutions can be integrated as part of feeding strategies addressing these different physiological aspects. The combination of tools targeting feed intake, digestion processes and gut environment provides a structured approach to accompany piglets during this period and support consistency in production systems.
