Antibiotics in the poultry industry

Antibiotics are commonly used in the poultry industry for the treatment and prevention of respiratory diseases and other bacterial infections.

Different categories of antibiotics are used for farm animals: 

  • Ionophores: which are used as coccidiostats for a protozoal infection which needs to be controlled in poultry (see the specific issue related to coccidia).
  • To prevent disease, whereby they are used as a preventive measure in drinking water and in feeds against pathogenic bacteria (see the specific issue related to antibiotic reduction).
  • For therapeutic use to cure some disease outbreaks.
  • To promote growth through the use of a subtherapeutic concentration to obtain a “growth promotion” effect. 

This issue deals with the use of antibiotics as a prevention measure in feeds and/or water. The difference between making a profit or loss in the poultry industry is often determined by the incidence of infectious disease, where the risk is continuous. 

As the use of antibiotics for preventive purposes has been reduced, this risk of infectious diseases, including coccidiosis and clostridial infections, has increased. 

Many antibiotic treatments on farms are now used to prevent the appearance of dysbiosis at the critical age of 12-18 days.

Programs to reduce antibiotic usage
