How to manage Post-Weaning Diarrhea (PWD) in piglets: Building gut resilience to secure nursery performance

Post-weaning diarrhea (PWD) remains one of the most economically significant challenges in pig production. For pig producers, its impact goes beyond clinical diarrhea, directly affecting nursery performance, growth consistency, treatment needs, and overall production predictability. PWD typically occurs within 3-10 days after weaning and is characterized by abrupt watery diarrhea, dehydration, a marked growth stop, and, in severe outbreaks, mortality up to 20%. 

In this article, we aim to describe how building gut resilience can support a smoother weaning transition and help secure stable nursery performance, by reviewing the etiology of PWD and provide some practical tools to keep piglets healthy.
