Beyond Cooling: How Methionine Mitigates Heat Stress in Dairy Cows and Safeguards Offspring

Heat stress is no longer a seasonal nuisance; it’s a core risk factor that depresses milk yield, alters immune  function, and programs lasting drawbacks in the next generation. While cooling and heat abatement remain critical, meeting essential nutrient requirements during heat stress can add protection.

In this regard, balancing diets for essential amino acids (AA), especially methionine (Met), has emerged as a practical tool to help cows cope with heat stress and to buffer calves against the hidden costs of late-gestation heat stress. This is because research over the last few years has highlighted the functional roles of AA beyond protein synthesis.
