The carbon footprint of aquaculture production is coming to the forefront of environmental considerations that preoccupy consumers. Life cycle assessment (LCA) has become the leading tool for identifying key environmental impacts through the production system, from aquafeed production to human consumption of shrimp.

This article describes the application of LCA to measure the potential of digestion and health enhancing functional feed additives to reduce the carbon footprint of shrimp production. It is concluded that effective functional feed additives such as Sanacore®GM and Aqualyso® can be used by the shrimp industry as tools to support growth, health, and profitability,  but also to reduce the carbon footprint of production by 20-40%.
