Understanding the challenge of heat stress

Heat stress occurs when animals cannot effectively dissipate excess heat, leading to physiological imbalances. The consequences include reduced feed intake, slower growth, compromised immune function and several financial losses for producers.

During periods of intense heat, broilers may lose up to 15% of their feed efficiency. Farmers face the dual challenge of ensuring animal welfare while maintaining economic viability.

Research underscores the widespread impact of heat stress as studies show that broilers experience an increase in oxidative stress markers by up to 30% during heat waves. The oxidative stress impairs cellular function, leading to a decline in average daily gain (ADG) by up to 12% in affected flocks.

The benefits of antioxidants

In poultry production, stress conditions are a common factor in decreasing bird performance. Heat stress is one of such conditions that can occur in a variety of situations and environments. There are oxidative stress-related changes in broilers subjected to heat stress conditions. The impact of feeding antioxidants may therefore be greater when exposed to stressors, including heat. Research has shown that under heat stress conditions, supplementation with OH-SeMet can increase antioxidant protection. It improves broilers’ Se status and positively modulates the endogenous redox system to a greater extent than sodium selenite, demonstrating the importance of feeding growing broilers with an effective selenium source in order to improve adaptation to heat stress.

Feed Efficiency

separator
Challenge Icon

Feed efficiency in poultry production refers to the ability of birds to convert feed into body weight gain or other products such as eggs. It is crucial for economic viability, environmental sustainability, animal health and welfare.
